There were two exercises that day. The first, in colour, was to start by creating the overall shape using an oversized brush, then draw the lines with a finer brush in a second colour. The other exercise was a lesson in economy: using white gouache on black paper, we were instructed to draw the figure using only 12 lines, and finally only 8 lines. In both cases, I’ve shown the results of my class members along with mine; my studies are shown close up. The newspaper article is about artist Eric Fischl, better known for his canvas paintings, who had an exhibit of watercolour nudes. Inspiring work.
